SignCenter stocks a variety of intermediate (calendared) and high performance (cast) adhesive medias. Adhesive back media, also known as PSA (pressure sensitive adhesive) or RTA (ready to apply) is available in an enormous variety of configurations. Depending upon the application and printing material, the ink technology used might be latex, UV or solvent.

SignCenter stocks most of our adhesive media in 54″ wide rolls (53.5″ max print). Some vinyls are stocked in 60″ rolls (59.5″ max print). Call your customer service rep for details. For large prints vinyl is printed in “tiles” with overlap for installation. Our standard overlap is 1″. Another consideration for large prints is to provide files with “bleed” and request an extra 1 or 2 inches of print that can be trimmed off as necessary at the edges.

Nearly all the adhesive vinyl produced today is printed. In the days before the availability of cost effective large-format printers, almost all computer produced signs were made with solid color adhesive vinyl that was digitally cut and layered for multi-color effects. SignCenter still stocks a limited selection of solid color vinyl, primarily for very hard to print Pantone colors or impossible to print metallics.

Performance vs. Intermediate

The quality and longevity of adhesive vinyl in mostly determined in the production process. Our intermediate vinyls, (with a life of 1 – 5 years), are generally produced using a “calendared” process. Our high performance print media, (with a life of 5 – 10 years), is instead produced using a “cast” process. In addition to being much more durable, cast vinyl can be heated to conform to curved surfaces. For a detailed explanation of this distinction signindustry.com has an excellent article.

Translucency and Adhesive:

Digitally printed vinyl has different levels of transparency and types of adhesive. Vinyl can be opaque (with a gray backing), translucent for use in backlit applications, or transparent (with different degrees of optical clarity). Transparent vinyl is often printed using white ink and with white ink behind the colors to produce more accurate color. There are also specialty reflective and perforated adhesive vinyls.

Permanent vs. Removable

Permanent adhesive is not designed to be easily removed. When necessary a combination of manual scraping, chemicals and heat can be used to remove it. Removable adhesive is generally considered to be easy to peel off without residue for periods of 6 months to a year. After a year, removable vinyl becomes more and more permanent! Low tack adhesive is ideal for short term promotional graphics and is mostly repositionable.
